Law is a fabulous training ground for a career in politics as the skillsets are very similar. Both law and politics require the ability to absorb vast amounts of information and digest it into consumable arguments. Years in court were the perfect training for answering questions as a Minister at the despatch box.
How can students make the most of their time at law school? By reading, reading and reading a little bit more and then discussing, discussing and discussing a little bit more. Law students and young lawyers can best contribute to society by always giving up some time for pro-bono work. Those who seek to speak for us, either as legal or political representatives, need to look, think and represent all of Britain in all its diversity.
Every time a new parliamentary session starts and Her Majesty attends to open Parliament, it is a moving and humbling moment to think that someone like me, who comes from where I started, is part of this process.
My top tip for succeeding in a legal career is be prepared to grab an opportunity with both hands when it presents itself. I did so in my 20s and I started my own legal practice.
My main hope in the current political climate is that we continue to make case for progressive legal values in UK politics.

An unwillingness to integrate is one accusation often flung at British Muslim families. Yet Warsi insists the reality is more complicated. If you have a nice house, in a nice area, where people from all different backgrounds send their kids to the same posh schools, you can have nice dinner parties.
But if you are at the bottom of the pile — whether you are white, black, or anything else — then integration is not the biggest thing on your mind.
Nor was opposition to it ever just a one-way street. Our house would get egged. As with so many social issues British Muslims face, lack of integration is often cited as a possible cause of radicalisation.
Warsi herself agrees those seeking spousal visas must learn English, so I wonder what makes her so uncomfortable? Madrasas — Islamic sunday schools — are another example, she says. From —, she served in the Shadow Cabinet as minister for community cohesion and social action. In , she was appointed by Prime Minister David Cameron as minister without portfolio, becoming the first Muslim person to serve as a cabinet minister.
